Most regrinding houses use independent toll coaters, who use generic recipes for particular coatings, regardless of the type of tool or part that is in their chamber. At Better Edge, our coatings are optimized for drills and end mills. Controlled processes and capabilities for both standard and proprietary coatings provide better performance, increased flexibility and faster deliveries in our service from having our own in-house PVD coating center.

The most common coatings provided on high performance carbide drills are Titanium Nitride (TiN), Titanium Aluminum Nitride (TiAlN) and Aluminum Titanium Nitride (AlTiN). For end mills, TiAlN and AlTiN coatings are most prevalent. In order to optimize adhesion, we re-coat tools with the same type of coating the tools came to us with. However, when our customer asks us to enhance a tool for a particular application, we are often providing him with one of our own, proprietary coatings – Kabrlyn Advantage, or Kabrlyn Plus. We can also provide Titanium Diboride coating (TiB2), a high performance coating for machining Aluminum and Aluminum Alloys. This coating has also had good success in machining Titanium.
